Soothing

Everyone needs to be soothed or calmed in times of stress. ​Try one or all of these.....

  • Stroke the back of one hand with the other hand whilst saying something reassuring to yourself, e.g. "it'll be OK, I just need a bit more time".

  • Stroke your lips with your index finger or gently stroke your cheek. How nice does that feel?! Babies instinctively do this for themselves with a comforter or blanket.

  • Give yourself a hug. Wrap a blanket around your shoulders and upper body and pull it tight.

  • No blanket to hand? Tuck your right hand under your left armpit. Wrap your left arm across your body and hold your right shoulder. Squeeze tight, close your eyes and sink into your own hug. 

  • Sway gently from side to side.
